Outreach Programs

Outreach and community activities are an integral part of the Science Institute's mission. For over twenty years, the Science Institute has developed a unique and highly successful method of teaching science to non-scientists which integrates science, mathematics and technology with humanities and the arts and addresses the cultural backgrounds of the students.

This approach, which originally was developed for Columbia's student population, has been extended in the past seventeen years to science and mathematics enhancement workshops for Chicago Public School middle school and high school teachers, students and parents, with financial support (over $5 million) from the national Science Foundation, Illinois State Board of Education Science Literacy Program, Chicago Annenberg Challenge, and the Chicago Public School Board of Education.

The workshops have served over 1,000 science teachers who, in turn, serve over 30,000 high school students, 40,000 middle school students and close to 500 parents.
