These days, radio means more than just traditional AM/FM broadcasting – it’s a term that also refers to newer radio formats like satellite and digital broadcasting, internet streaming, and podcasting. Columbia understands the growth of this industry and its technology, so we’ve constructed a curriculum that prepares you for whatever aspect (and whatever format) of radio you’d like to pursue.
Our award-winning faculty work throughout the Chicago radio market as personalities, producers, programmers, and managers. So, in addition to working with state-of-the-art facilities and equipment, you also get the face-to-face guidance and insider perspectives that give you the edge in both the art and business of radio.
WCRX 88.1 is Columbia’s student-managed radio station and it serves as a forum for music, news, sports and community affairs for both Columbia College and the greater Chicago community. All Radio majors have the opportunity to put their original programming on WCRX, and all majors gain valuable “on-the-job” experience hosting music and talk shows, producing public service announcements, developing station promotions, and creating original content. Over the years WCRX has been honored with more than 90 awards, including a “Service to America” award from the National Association of Broadcasters, and a recent Gold Medal for Best Student Radio Station by the New York Festivals. You can find WCRX streaming live at colum.edu/wcrx.
