Project AIM

The Center for Community Arts Partnerships' (CCAP) Arts Integration Mentorship Project (Project AIM) introduces public school teachers and students to the authentic arts practice of professional artists by partnering teaching artists from Columbia College and community-based arts organizations with public school teachers in Chicago and Evanston.  The talented cadre of AIM teaching artists brings their expertise in creative writing, spoken-word performance, theatre, music, visual arts, book and paper arts, photography, and film to the classroom.  Working together, artists and teachers infuse the classroom with creativity and experiential learning that connect personal experiences to the core curriculum.  Using inquiry-based teaching, students are guided through each step of the creative process from brainstorming, revision and rehearsal, to exemplary performances, exhibitions, and documentation of their work.

Focusing on the integration of text and image, Project AIM explores parallels between arts and literacy learning.  Artists and teachers learn how to jointly create arts integrated curriculum that promotes reading and writing through the arts.

Project AIM also provides many opportunities for mentorship between teachers, artists, students and college faculty.  It establishes reciprocal learning communities by offering professional development through hands-on workshops and peer-to-peer training.

Most recently, CCAP was awarded a three-year, Art in Education Model Development and Dissemination grant from the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Innovation and Improvement.  This opportunity is an ideal evolution as Project AIM concurrently completes a similarly funded FIPSE (Fund for the Improvement of Post Secondary Education) grant that will lead to documentation and national dissemination of best practices in arts integration.

Project AIM has established partnerships with the following public schools in Chicago and Evanston:
