Jane Ann Legnard Alexandroff Scholarship

The Jane Ann Legnard Alexandroff Scholarship application is available online through your OASIS portal. Only complete scholarship applications submitted by the deadline will be reviewed by the scholarship committee.

Please follow all directions carefully. Students must submit the following materials to make a complete Jane Ann Legnard Alexandroff Scholarship application - there are five parts to the application:

Provide a one-page biography that tells the committee something about you, your background, and your life goals.

In a three-page essay, please describe the importance of social justice, and how you will use your skills as a creative professional to support these issues.

Provide an achievement list that describes other accomplishments to support your application such as awards earned, relevant experiences, and/or other recognitions received.

Two letters of recommendation are required: one from a Columbia College Chicago faculty member who is familiar with your academic achievement or accomplishment in your major, and one from a nonprofit organization program director or administrator that comments on your current involvement in the organization.

Note: Remember to contact your recommender directly before providing his/her information on the application. Be sure to give recommenders as much time as possible to write the letters. Requests made at the last minute are often difficult to fulfill by the deadline.

A current Student Aid Report (SAR) must be on file. To receive an SAR, students must complete a financial aid application (FAFSA), available after January 1st of each year.

1. Applicant Portal: You may scroll through the list of scholarship programs until you locate the Jane Ann Legnard Alexandroff Scholarship, and then select the "Start Application" link.


2. Scholarship Search: Select the "Search Scholarships" link in the navigation on the left-hand side of the page. You may search for the Jane Ann Legnard Alexandroff Scholarship by using category, keyword, or description/name search. Once you locate the program, select the "More Info" link to be taken to the application form.

The Jane Ann Legnard Alexandroff Endowed Scholarship was established to honor Jane Alexandroff and her extraordinary contributions to the evolution of Columbia College Chicago. Jane was the wife of Mirron "Mike" Alexandroff, who was president of Columbia College Chicago from 1961-1992. During their tenure, Columbia became the largest and most diverse college in the nation specializing in the visual, performing, and media arts.

As Jane played a vital role in the growth of the school, she was also a fierce advocate of human rights and social justice issues. She was active in the civil rights, women's rights, and gay rights movements, and was an outspoken opponent of the Vietnam War. In 1986, she founded Chicago Artists Abroad, a granting agency designed to support Chicago artists performing and exhibiting outside of the United States, for which she served as Executive Director until her death in 1996.

• Application must be submitted by February 01, 2013 (11:59 pm) for review by the committee
• Maximum award of this one-year scholarship is up to $3000, half awarded in Fall and half awarded in Spring
• Recipients who graduate in Fall 2013 will receive a one-semester award up to $1500
• The award can be applied toward tuition expenses only
• Students must be enrolled at full-time status at the time of application and must maintain full-time enrollment during the 2013-14 academic year
• Recipients will be asked to complete a 200 word essay every year describing how the Jane Ann Legnard Alexandroff Scholarship has made a difference in his/her life to share with the donor. Portions of the essay may also be used for publication
• The rules and regulations governing other sources of financial aid (federal, state, institutional and other grants, gifts, or loans) will apply
• Columbia College Chicago reserves the right to withhold the award in any year in which, at the sole discretion of the scholarship committee, suitable candidates cannot be found among applicants
