Sharon A. Palermo Memorial Scholarship

Please note: The Sharon A. Palermo Memorial Scholarship is managed by the The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS). All applicants should follow the instructions below and on the NATAS webstite to when applying for this scholarship.

The following must be received by the office of the Chicago/Midwest Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences by the application deadline:

• A completed application;

• A resume that includes any internships or employment history;

• At least two letters of recommendation: one from the applicant's department chairperson or a faculty member and the other from industry-related internship or employment;

• An official copy of your college transcript. Official copies can be obtained through Columbia's Records Office.

All materials sent must be able to be easily duplicated for the judges. Please DO NOT staple pages together or submit creatively constructed presentation packages that are difficult to duplicate.

DO NOT submit tapes, folders, or binders. We are unable to view them and we will not be able to return any items submitted.

This scholarship was created in memory of Sharon, wife of long-time Columbia College faculty member Luke Palermo, who sadly passed in the Fall of 2005.

Luke Palermo’s contributions to Columbia College, The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, and the television community at large, over the last thirty-plus years are many.  Sharon, Luke's wife of 30 years, was an integral part of those contributions. Sharon always chose to work in education and was committed to those children she came in contact with far beyond her job. She lived life with great joy, whether absorbed in a mystery novel, a rousing game of Scrabble, a placid lakeside vacation, or cooking with Luke.

A scholarship in her name is an appropriate way to remember this wonderful person.

• Maximum award of this one-year scholarship is $4,000, awarded in Fall 2013
• The award is applied toward tuition and fee costs
• Students must be enrolled as full-time students at the time of application and must maintain full-time enrollment during the Fall 2013 semester 
• Scholarship may not be used toward independent study abroad programs
• Recipients will be asked to submit a short biography describing their background and life goals that will be shared with donors; portions of the essay may also be used for publication
• The rules and regulations governing other sources of financial aid (federal, state, institutional and other grants, gifts, or loans) will apply
• Columbia College reserves the right to withhold the award in any year in which, at the sole discretion of the scholarship committee, suitable candidates cannot be found among applicants
