How long have you been on faculty at Sherwood?

1996–2001; 2005-present.

What do you want to impart to your students through your teaching?

An appreciation of diverse musical styles; good reading and excellent musicianship.

Are there specific methods or techniques that you use in your teaching that may be important to share with prospective students?
I think it is important to have students learn pieces they enjoy playing, but that also have pedagogical value.

What do you enjoy most about teaching?
Seeing students get excited about music and helping them succeed and have positive musical experiences.

Briefly describe your musical pursuits outside Sherwood.

I compose piano music and have numerous publications with FJH Music Co. and Alfred Publishing. I also am very involved in some national composition contests. I am also on the faculty at UIC, Columbia College Chicago and Harper College.

What is your earliest musical experience or best musical memory?

I remember as a child sitting in the living room listening to my mom teaching piano.

Please describe one of your favorite teachers or mentors.
My Mom - She helped me learn how to play piano, teach piano, and compose for piano.

What is your favorite type of music?

Romantic, Impressionistic, and 20th Century.
