Yvonne Huntley

Piano

Preferred Student Age: Any.

Preferred Student Level: None, but likes to maintain a diversity of age and ability in her studio..

What do you want to impart to your students through your teaching?
My "grand scheme" is that I want to teach my students not to need me - to have the skills to learn on their own. But not too fast because I need to make a living!

Are there specific methods or techniques that you use in your teaching that may be important to share with prospective students?

Each student is treated as an individual. A "lesson plan" is catered to the individual needs and learning style of each child. There is very good structure to her teaching, but not restricted by teaching strictly out of one method book.

What do you enjoy most about teaching?

Seeing kids make progress. Seeing students realize they can do something that was previously beyond their skills.

What is your earliest musical experience or best musical memory?

Yvonne had an early experience as the assistant for her piano teacher when she was 14. On Saturday afternoons, when her teacher needed a break, she would take over and teach the younger students. Even at that early age, she started forming ideas of her teaching philosophy by observing the things everyone was assigned to work on. Mrs. Huntley prefers teaching in the community arts' school setting.

What is your favorite type of music?

I listen to whatever I am working on at the time. If I had to choose, my favorites are Rachmaninoff and Chopin.
