NBCU Academy Grant

For continuing undergraduate students

2024-25 application will open November 1, 2023.

The NBCU Academy Grant provides direct student funding to students pursuing a degree in journalism, media studies, film and television studies, media-related technology or engineering, and related media fields such as advertising and public relations that align with the mission of the NBCU Academy. The College's partnership with NBCU Academy reflects a shared commitment to diversity, equity, and inclsuion, with NBCU Academy elevating the next generation of journalists and providing students from underrepresented communities a pipeline into news, broadcast media, and related media, information, and technology fields.

Direct student funding provided through NBCU Academy Grants may be used for field reporting, equipment purchases, student housing, tuition subsidies, textbooks and/or academic materials required for student coursework. Columbia College Chicago considers student grantees a cohort, and provides access to significant opportunities made available by NBCU, including virtual and in-person guest lectures, academic workshops and recruiting events, and a range of other benefits that are tied to career development and post-graduate success. Grant funds are prioritized for juniors and seniors who possess a track record of academic achievement, a demonstrated interest in diversity, equity and inclusion, and an investment in creating media content reflective of diverse communities that provide insight into contemporary challenges.

The NBCU Academy Grant is open to:

Full-time undergraduates studying within the School of Media Arts
2024-25 Undergraduate students who will complete a minium of 60 credit hours by the end of the Spring 2024 semester, with at least 12 credits hours completed at Columbia by the end of the Fall 2023 semester
Students who have earned a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or higher

How to Apply
Visit Internal Scholarships and click on APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIPS to access the NBCU Academy Grant. Only complete scholarship applications submitted by the deadline will be reviewed by the scholarship committee.

Please follow all directions carefully. Students must submit the following materials to make a complete NBCU Academy Grant. There are two parts to the application:

PART 1: CREATIVE SAMPLE

Provide one sample of your creative or journalistic work in your chosen format, either by uploading it to the scholarship portal, or by providing a link to your work on an online platform.

Please upload your sample in .pdf, .doc, or .docx format. Upload size limit is 50MB.

PART 2: CREATIVE SAMPLE SUMMARY

In 300-500 words, briefly describe your goals and the key challenges you faced with the creative sample you are submitting.

PART 3: ESSAY

In a two-page essay, describe how your creative work aligns with the mission of the NBCU Academy (listed at the top of the page) and demonstrates your commitment to diveresity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility. What contemporary socio-economic, culutral, or political challenges do you explore in your work?

Your essay must be double-spaced and must include your name and MyColumbia ID number in the upper right-hand corner of each page. Please upload your response in .pdf, .doc, or .docx format.

In keeping with Comcast NBCUniversal and NBCU News Group’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, the multi-year partnership of the NBCU Academy involves 45 academic partners including Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Hispanic-Serving Institutions and colleges with significant Latino, Asian American and Pacific Islander, Black, Indigenous and tribal populations – reaching students from underrepresented groups including those from diverse racial, ethnic, sexual orientation, gender identity, ability, economic, and geographic backgrounds. NBCU Academy is a journalism and content creation training program that builds a pipeline from classrooms to the newsroom and media industry. Academy resources are aimed at providing more equitable access to diverse and marginalized communities that have been historically underrepresented in the media industry.
Scholarship Terms
- Application must be submitted by March 1, 2024 (11:59 pm) for review by the committee
- Amount of this one-year scholarship is up to $2,500, awarded half in Fall and half in Spring
- Scholarship is applied to all components of the student’s cost of attendance. This includes tuition, books, fees, and housing.
- Recipients must maintain full-time enrollment during the 2024-25 academic year
- Outstanding documents to Columbia Central before the scholarship can be disbursed. Students can review missing documents in the MyColumbia portal under MyFinancials
- Scholarship may be used toward a study abroad program through one of Columbia's student exchange programs, excluding Summer sessions. Please note: Recipients who enroll in an independent study abroad program will forfeit their scholarship during the semester spent abroad
- The rules and regulations governing other sources of financial aid (federal, state, institutional and other grants, gifts, or loans) will apply
- Columbia College Chicago reserves the right to withhold the award in any year in which, at the sole discretion of the scholarship committee, suitable candidates cannot be found among applicants
