Roger and Sylvia McNair Travel Story Scholarship

For continuing undergraduate and graduate students

The Roger and Sylvia McNair Travel Story Scholarship was established to encourage international travel among Creative Writing students and to support the experience of studying and writing abroad by assisting with the costs of tuition and fees. This year, the program will support students interested in studying in one of Creative Writing study abroad programs in Paris, Rome, or Prague.

• How to Apply

  Visit Internal Scholarships and click on APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIPS to access the College-Wide Graduate Scholarship Application. Only complete scholarship applications submitted by the deadline will be reviewed by the scholarship committee. 
  
  Please follow all directions carefully. Students must submit the following materials to make a complete Roger and Sylvia McNair Travel Story Scholarship application. There are two parts to the application:

  PART 1: ESSAY

  In 250 words, discuss how the travel will enrich your creative and academic life. 

   

  PART 2: WORK SAMPLE

  You must provide a writing sample of up to five pages or three poems. 

  Your submission must include your name and MyColumbia ID number in the upper right-hand corner of the page.  Please upload your response in a .doc, .docx, ord .pdf format.

• About Roger and Sylvia McNair
  Sylvia McNair, travel writer and editor, held the belief that travel and a broad world view are important to any prose writer. Her son, Roger McNair, was a long-time Chicago taxi-driver who enjoyed getting people to the places they longed and needed to go while sharing stories with his passengers. The Roger and Sylvia McNair Scholarship is awarded in the spirit of place, story, travel, and world view.
• Scholarship Terms
  • Application must be submitted by April 14, 2023 (11:59 pm) for study abroad programs in Prague during the Summer term;
  • Maximum amount is up to $1,000;
  • Award is applied toward tuition only;
  • Students be enrolled at the time of application;
  • Recipients participate in a Creative Writing program study abroad program in Prague;
  • Recipient may receive the scholarship only during the semester he/she is enrolled in a Creative Writing study abroad program in Prague;
  • Students who elect not to attend the study abroad program in Prague will forfeit the scholarship and will need to reapply if they decide to attend in another semester;
  • Recipient must adhere to the policies and procedures that are unique to the Creative Writing study abroad program;
  • The rules and regulations governing other sources of financial aid (federal, state, institutional and other grants, gifts, or loans) will apply;
  • Columbia College Chicago reserves the right to withhold the scholarship in any year in which, at the sole discretion of the scholarship committee, suitable candidates cannot be found among applicants.

  The Degree Completion Assistance Grant provides financial support to juniors and seniors who are nearing graduation, and who can demonstrate that receiving assistance from the grant will help them in achieving their academic goals.
