Strategic Communication MA '23

“Columbia College Chicago offers a one-of-a-kind experience and network of creatives; everything you want to learn or be connected to, is right at your fingertips,” says Star Johnson, a recent recipient of an MA in Strategic Communication.

What would you say has been the most surprising thing you learned at Columbia?

Last summer, in my Strategic Communications Capstone Lab, I learned how to develop a 360-marketing campaign for Allstate Insurance, using seven different strategies. It was one of the most challenging and surprising courses I’ve taken here, as it has stretched my creative mind out of my comfort zone. Columbia Adjunct Clifton Simmons guided me through the tedious process of developing my campaign. This experience has been the most valuable for my education and career.

What individuals or programs at Columbia were helpful to you in reaching your goal of graduating?

During my time at Columbia, Professor and Director of Graduate Programs Laurence Minsky was extremely helpful in guiding me through both his Digital Content & Analytics course and my career in copywriting. He took time outside of class and his busy work schedule to provide resources and mentor me on how to build a creative portfolio. He also connected me with industry people in my field and as a result, I secured an interview. After visiting his office and seeing various awards he’s received for his creative work in advertising, I was truly inspired.

What are your plans for after graduation?

My plan after graduation is to be a content strategist and provide freelance business consulting services to entrepreneurs like me. I also plan to continue building on my new business plan and learn as much as I can about the marketing industry. I believe being a lifelong- learner is the key to success.

If you were going to sum up your experience at Columbia in one sentence, what would you say?
