Sarah Schorle

Theatre BA, Concentration in Playwriting, Minor in Performing Arts Management '23

“I’ve been blessed to work with so many amazing faculty members … who have been such great mentors during my time at Columbia,” says recent Theatre graduate Sarah Schorle.

What would you say has been the most surprising thing you learned at Columbia?

Everybody feels like the imposter in the room. It’s easy to assume you are the only one unsure about what’s going on or do not have the skills to be there, but you are in the room for a reason. Just because your journey doesn’t look the same as others, you still belong – you made it there for a reason.

What individuals or programs at Columbia were helpful to you in reaching your goal of graduating?

I’ve been blessed to work with so many amazing faculty members (Paul Amandes, Carson Becker, Heather Gilbert, Nykol Dedreu, Jackie Penrod - just to name a few) who have been such great mentors during my time at Columbia. They’ve seen me at my best and worst, yet they still support me and encourage my growth. I would not be who I am today if our paths hadn't crossed.

What are your plans for after graduation?

I hope to continue working in theatre administration or as a stage manager in Chicago, as well as writing and workshopping my plays.

If you were going to sum up your experience at Columbia in one sentence, what would you say?

Everything I never expected.
